?DANIEL BR?HL: ?I am proud to work in European cinema?

Maybe the name Daniel Br?hl doesn?t ring you a bell, but if we are reminded, he?s in movies like ?Good Bye Lenin? or ?Salvador?, surely you remember his shy smile, his tender glance and his typical messy hair. Daniel stars in the cinematographic adaptation for Unai Elorriaga?s ?A Tram to SP?. We spoke with him in Algorta.

 Interview with Daniel Brühl

Daniel Brühl can be seen twice over in cinemas this month in Germany. He has a guest appearance in the action movie The Bourne Ultimatum and is the eponymous hero in Salvador, a film which tells the true story of an anarchist who was the last Spaniard to be executed under Franco’s regime. We chatted to the Barcelona-born actor.

How big is the overlap between Salvador the anarchist and Brühl the actor?

On the one hand I am happy that I live in these times and in this country and am happy that I have never suffered under a dictatorship and have never had to ask if I should rob a bank to defend myself. On the other hand, looking back, there is a certain envy and respect for these courageous, idealistic daredevils of yesteryear. It was an opportunity for me to understand the country and the times a little better.

Interviews: Daniel Br?hl, a European actor

Since being discovered in 2002 in the film “Goodbye Lenin!”, Daniel Brühl has conquered Europe. In “Salvador”, he plays a young militant anarchist cut down by Francoism.

Passing through Brussels on Tuesday for the preview Manuel Huerga’s “Salvador”, Daniel Brühl was charming, serene. This young actor knew how to withstand the triumphant success of “Goodbye Lenin!” which, in 2002, propelled his angelic face to stage front. Since then, he has been seen again in Germany in “The Edukators”, but also in Britain (“Ladies in Lavender”) and in France ("Joyeux Noël/Merry Christmas").

Interviews: In Berlin with Daniel Br?hl
Posted by meininki on Sunday, June 10 @ 20:13:33 CEST (1989 reads)

Shortly, the film will be released in Spain. While awaiting the eagerly anticipated moment, the actor reveals the favourite corners of his city to us.

He is a lucky bloke. He has only just turned 28 years old and he has just bought the car of his dreams (a convertible orange model Peugeot 304 from 1970) as well as an apartment with three balconies right in the centre of Prenzlauer Berg, currently one of the most fashionable addresses in Berlin.

Daniel tells us about it with the excitement of a boy with a new toy, and his eyes shine when he confesses that he already has tickets for the football World Cup final (the championship is taking in Germany in June 2006). But the jovial and self-assured demeanour that he shows while he talks to us about his latest acquisitions changes into a mature and serious attitude when he speaks of "Salvador", his most recent film and the first that he has made entirely with Spanish backing.

Interviews: Daniel Br?hl doesn't trust women

Vanity FairHis job as an actor is a “constant temptation.” He weeds out false admirers mercilessly.

Since he performed in Julie Delpy's film “Two days in
Paris”, Germany’s shooting star, Daniel Brühl and the French actress have been friends; the couple like each other’s company. Brühl will also be taking part in Delpy’s latest project as the lead actor and lover of the notorious Hungarian vampire, Elisabeth Báthory. For Delpy and Vogue magazine Brühl talked about false admirers, acting and ex-girlfriends.

Delpy wanted to know if Brühl had been allowed to watch television as a child. “Almost never. My parents were very strict in this respect. I wasn’t allowed to watch any American series, only films about animals… I then didn’t have a television at home myself for a long time and even today I almost only ever watch the news. But I do have a projector and enjoy watching DVDs.”

For a long time, Brühl and the actress Jessica Schwarz were seen as a golden couple. They separated a year ago. Brühl considered the moment that a relationship finishes. “Separations have never been an easy thing for me. It’s always been the case that one of us has had deeper feelings than the other and that makes everything very painful.”

“But there are also ex-girlfriends with whom I still have a very good relationship as friends…Sometimes you meet them again and wonder, “Why, for heaven’s sake, am I no longer with her? This woman is so wonderful, how could I leave her? Even if the relationship was over ten years ago.”

Director Manuel Huerga on "Salvador (Puig Antich)" by Kita van Slooten

The Spanish director Manuel Huerga has worked on a wide variety of projects. He, for instance, made a documentary about Gaudí, but also directed the opening and closing ceremonies of the Olympic Games in Barcelona. His latest movie tells the story of young anarchist Salvador Puig Antich, who fought for his ideals and ended up in prison. After an unfair trial he was sentenced to death and on 2 march 1974 Salvador was killed. He was the last political prisoner to be executed under the regime of Francisco Franco.

"I sometimes envy my characters" - interview with Daniel Brühl by Kita van Slooten

With a German father and a Spanish mother Daniel Brühl is the perfect example of an European actor. In "Goodbye Lenin" he saw the Berlin wall tumble down and after that things went fast. Apart from growing into a popular actor in Germany, many other borders have been crossed. Brühl played the Polish violinist in the British movie "Ladies in Lavender" and has starred in the French "Joyeux Noël". In the new movie "Salvador" he has the leading role as Spanish anarchist Salvador Puig Antich.

DANIEL Brühl is European cinema's wunderkind, writes Neala Johnson

As Gael Garcia Bernal is to Mexico, Daniel Brühl is to Germany: the young, attractive, magnetic actor whose rise has mirrored -- even helped create -- the budding film industry of his home country.
So it's not surprising to hear that the two twentysomething actors, who met at film festivals in Berlin and Cannes, have clicked and have a project in the works.
It's a play with an Icelandic director that will start in Reykjavik, move to London, then hopefully continue on to New York and Mexico City.

“Goodbye Lenin!” has opened doors across the world for Daniel Brühl. In an interview with stern.de, Brühl speaks of his issues with filming nude scenes, about shooting films in Spain and breaking into Hollywood.

Mr Brühl, the role of Karl, the introverted mathematician and insurance clerk, in “Ein Freund von mir”[A friend of mine] is a demanding one.

A challenge. The casting process was long and drawn out. I also tried out for the role of Hans (the role Jürgen Vogel played – ed). That was great fun because I had the opportunity to be very annoying and do lots of silly things. But Sebastian Schipper, the director, changed his mind so I had to get out the precision tools, withdraw all that exuberance and work on a minimalist level. In some ways I can see aspects of myself in this character but I am a cheerful Cologne sort of soul and not like the northern Germans, who are reserved and rather introverted.

Mr Vogel, Mr Brühl, what does it feel like to be a world record holder?

DANIEL BRÜHL: That was pretty cool. On a single day, we were in five cities and in ten cinemas for the premiere of our new film "Ein Freund von mir". At one point we felt like politicians.

Here is the script of the chat with fans in English:

1. Where do you keep all these awards that you have received? (Note: One of the votes that made you win the audience award was mine) Kisses.
Daniel: Thank you. I keep them on a shelf. They have already gathered dust.
2. Despite the fact that the story is really tough; did you have a good time while shooting the film?
Daniel: Very good, especially in the first part, which is lighter and funnier. I made many new friends in Barcelona; I believe I know every bar.
3. I believe that your father wasn’t pleased when you told him that you wanted to become an actor. What does he think about it now?
Daniel: He’s a director. In the beginning he wanted to protect me. But right now that he knows that I’m not so bad, we even made a film together.

Interview with Daniel Brühl, protagonist of "Salvador" and "Merry Christmas"
Kaos. Cultura (La Vanguardia) [16.11.2005 20:49]

LLUÍS BONET MOJICA - 13/11/2005

The shooting of “Salvador” has finished. It’s a film by Manuel Huerga about a young anarchist from Barcelona Salvador Puig Antich, who was garrotted in 1974, after an irregular court martial. Also, on the 2nd of December there’s a premiere of “Merry Christmas” in Spain, chosen by France to compete for The Oscar Award as the best foreign language film. This film by Christian Carion tells about an unusual event which took place during the World War I – the truce that evolved into brotherhood between French, German and Scottish soldiers in the north of France, during the Christmas Eve of 1914. Daniel Brühl, who since “Goodbye Lenin” is developing an active, international career – plays a young and initially haughty German officer. “Merry Christmas” won the critics’ award during the Cinema Week in Valladolid

Tonight 25 000 people formed a human chain, making it the "world's biggest national team". Amid the crowd, one celebrity after the next. I've seen Ottmar Hitzfeld, Basti Schweinsteiger, Axel Schulz, one or the other soap starlet and the creme de la creme of German film.

Benno F?rmann (Merry Christmas, Anatomy) was there, Uwe Ochsenknecht (Das Boot, Men...) took part, J?rgen Vogel (Kleine Haie, Naked), enjoyed mingling with the crowd, so did Peter Lohmeyer (The Miracle of Bern), but Daniel Br?hl (Merry Christmas, Good Bye Lenin) attracted the flashlight like a magnet. Afterwards, people partied in the Chocolate Bar and Daniel Br?hl found the time for a short interview.

Posted by meininki on Friday, November 25 @ 22:07:44 CET (1371 reads)
The Western Front in WWI brought the enemies England, France and Germany within a stone's through of each other. On Christmas Eve 1914 the soldiers put up candels and christmas trees in No Man's land between the trenches, sang and drank together, exchanged presents, buried their dead and even played football (soccer) together. The peace among the "deadly enemies" lasted for 2 days, until the incident became known to the generals. French director Christian Carion turned the true event into the touching film Merry Christmas (Joyeux No?l) . Daniel Br?hl plays the part of German lieutenant Horstmayer, who plays an active part in the "fraternizations". Angelika Rausch talked to the actor in Berlin.
